Putnam Valley Kindergartners Bring the Joy of Thanksgiving to Their Audience by Margaret Sternberg
Putnam Valley kindergartners got the Thanksgiving holiday off to a joyful start as they sang songs, read poetry, beat drums and talked about what they had learned about the Native Americans during Thanksgiving Songfest, an annual performance given by the school’s kindergartners for more than 20 years.
Playing to packed houses at their morning and afternoon performances, the children sang Albuquerque the Turkey, When the Pilgrims Came, Over the River and Thanks A Lot by Raffi, with accompanying hand movements and choreographed movement around the stage.
Dressed festively in paper bonnets, colorful paper headdresses with paper feathers or paper hats and unfazed by the wind briefly cutting off the lighting, these contemporary intrepid young settlers and Native Americans kept singing through the temporary setback.
The time passed too quickly, everyone had a great time and one thing is certain: parents of next year’s kindergartners have something to look forward to.
