Bondi Proposes a Revised Funding Schedule to Close Budget Gap
Putnam County Executive Bob Bondi sent a revised funding schedule to Chairman of the Legislature Dan Birmingham in yet another effort to address Putnam County's projected budget gap. The list includes all organizations that receive discretionary nonmandated funding from the County.
"We have to find ways to address this ongoing problem," said County Executive Bondi, "and the solution should not be born solely by the taxpayers. Last week, we started this process by asking our own employees who currently pay nothing for health insurance to begin contributing. Now, we must turn to these outside agencies and ask them to bear their part of the burden."
The revised schedule will reduce funding on a sliding scale to all outside agencies that receive County funds. Organizations that receive $10,000 or less will not be affected by the funding change. Agencies that receive $11,000 to $50,000 in funding will be reduced by 5% and those organizations that receive more than $50,000 in funding will be reduced by 10%. This will save the County $97,780.
Ulster County lawmakers recently reduced their contributions to outside agencies, with some agencies receiving nothing and others having their funding reduced by 50%. Bondi rejected a flat reduction across the board and opted for the sliding scale in order to ensure that the smaller organizations who receive less aid are not so dramatically affected. Incidentally, the Majority of the Ulster County Legislature are members of the Democratic Party, indicating that these fiscal issues transcend political as well as geographical lines.
"We believe that our proposal is fair and equitable and certainly necessary in light of our current financial crisis," said Bondi. "We hope the Legislature will thoroughly consider it."
