Bomb Threat Causes Evacuation of Bank in Village of Cold Spring

The Wachovia Bank branch on Route 9D in Cold Spring was evacuated on Tuesday, May 16th, after someone slipped a note into a bank depository demanding money and referring to a bomb. No bomb was found and no one was hurt in the incident.

The threatening note scrawled on the back of a banking slip was inserted into the deposit slot of an automated teller machine at the bank sometime overnight. A teller processing deposits found the note at about 9:30 Tuesday morning and told the branch manager, who in turn notified the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.

Deputy Sheriffs Michael Ball and Marc Rampolla were dispatched to the bank, where they evacuated employees and customers, as well as persons in neighboring businesses, as a precaution.

Captain Thomas Lindert, Senior Investigators John Rees, Patrick Castaldo and Gary Hosmer, Investigators Anthony Nappi, Thomas Velotti, Christopher Spiconardi and James Bambino, and Sergeant Arby Arnold, responded to the bank. An MTA Railroad Police K-9 tandem-Officer Paul Carufe and his dog Silka assisted in a sweep of the bank premises to rule out the presence of a bomb. After that precautionary search, officials allowed employees and customers back into the bank.

The Sheriff's Department is continuing to investigate this case to identify the person who left the threatening note in the ATM. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 845-225-4300, extension 274. All calls will be kept confidential.
