Southeast Man Arrested After Stalking Ex-Girlfriend

On May 4, 2006, a Town of Southeast resident arrived at the Putnam County Sheriff's Office to make a complaint that her former boyfriend was stalking her. Investigator Michael Nalbone initiated an investigation into the complaint, which revealed that during the month of April the victim received numerous calls to her cellular and home telephones from Anthony Massimo, 21, of Southeast. Despite her repeated attempts to stop her exboyfriend's actions, Mr. Massimo continued to barrage the victim with phone calls, as well as send messages to her via computer.

As a result of the investigation, Judge James Borkowski, of the Town of Southeast Justice Court, issued a warrant for Mr. Massimo's arrest. On May 15, 2006, Investigator Nalbone, Investigator Thomas Velotti,

and Deputy Sheriff Michael Ball, responded to Mr. Massimo's residence in order to execute the warrant, taking him into custody. Mr. Massimo was transported to the Sheriff's Office headquarters where he was processed and booked on a charge of Stalking in the Fourth Degree. Mr. Massimo was subsequently arraigned by Southeast Town Justice Richard Vercollone and released on his own recognizance, pending a May 23, 2006 court appearance in the Town of Southeast Justice Court. During arraignment, Judge Vercollone issued a "stay away" order, prohibiting the defendant from having any contact with the victim.

Stalking in the Fourth Degree is a misdemeanor charge punishable by up to three months in jail and a fine not to exceed $500.
