PVHS Choir and Friends Sing, Play Vivaldi Gloria
The Putnam Valley High School (PVHS) Mixed Choir will give a special performance of Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria at this year's Spring Concert, Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at 7:30 pm in the PVHS Performing Arts center (PAC).
The work will be performed at the end of the concert program and will feature accompaniment by a string quartet, oboe, trumpet, and harpsichord. Choral Director Gerard Micera has asked members of the faculty, staff and community to participate in the event. "We will have members from that group joining our Mixed Choir members, and we are very excited about this collaborative musical event. We
hope that people from the surrounding community will join us at this free concert."
Although he is known for a relatively small number of pieces, Antonio Vivaldi, a native of Venice, was a prolific composer. Gloria is Vivaldi's best known choral work. Perhaps his most famous instrumental accomplishment is his series of four concertos entitled The Four Seasons. Originally ordained a priest in the Roman Catholic church and known colloquially as "the Red Priest" because of his red hair, Vivaldi's ill health prohibited him from performing Mass, but not from brilliantly composing and teaching music. He was born in 1678 and died in 1741.
