CV Firefighters Take Training For Incident Management PV Ambulance Corps offers free First Aid and CPR classes by Emily Stewart Firefighters from the Continental Village Fire Department attend training
The Continental Village Firefighters took the federally required Incident Command System 100 training course last Tuesday. The Incident Command System (ICS) was set up during the 1970s, but has become relevant once again after 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina.
The ICS is designed to minimize confusion and meet the needs of emergency and non-emergency incidents of any kind. It also allows personnel from a variety of agencies to meld rapidly into a common management structure, according to the ICS lesson overview provided by FEMA.
Under the ICS, authority is given to one person, the "incident commander." Beneath that person are numerous other supervisory positions. These positions supercede any rankings within individual departments or agencies.
IC100 is mandated for all fire departments and ambulance corps, as well as police departments, government officials and schools in New York State that seek federal funding. The deadline for course completion is October, 2006. After taking the class, participants must pass an online test in order to receive a certificate of completion.
The Continental Village Fire Department is also having a "boot drive" in Peekskill, on Sunday, July 9th at 9 am to raise money for a new fire truck. Last week they responded to calls for a possible structure fire at Paraco Gas on the 19th and a brush fire on the 23rd.
The Garrison Ambulance Corp has a new EMT, Lisa Kay, 26, who received her certification this past week. Kay is the Director of Facilities at the Walter Hoving Home for Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Garrison. Kay joined the Corp in February and took the required class to become an emergency medical technician. "I wanted to get involved in the community, and be able to help out wherever I could," she said. Kay's involvement was inspired and encouraged by Beth Greco, her boss at the Hoving Home. Kay hopes one day to become an intermediary or a medic.
The Garrison Ambulance Corp responded to one car accident last week, however the patient refused medical attention.
The Putnam Valley Ambulance Corp is offering free CPR and First Aid classes this summer. CPR classes will be at 7pm on the following dates: July 10th, July 20th, Aug. 7th, and Aug. 17th. A First Aid class will be held on July 15th from 10:30 am until 2:30 pm. Groups of people wishing to be certified in CPR or First Aid may call headquarters at 526-3119 and request alternative dates. Classes are scheduled as needed, said Thomas Gulley 1st Lieutenant of the Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corp.
Other classes available are Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens, Emergency Oxygen Administration, and Disaster Preparedness. All classes are offered at no charge, except for any books and materials, which may be purchased at cost. Contact headquarters or the Department of Parks and Recreation for further schedules.
The Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corp responded to 19 calls last week.
It was a busy week for the Putnam Valley Fire Department as well. They responded to 10 car accidents, six calls for wires down, two car fires, two automatic alarms and one mutual aid call with the Continental Village Fire Department for a possible structure fire. The possible structure fire turned out to be only a smoking generator, said Chief Michael Koenig.
The Cold Spring Fire Company is continuing to prepare for their big 110th anniversary celebration coming up on July 8th. Also, they had four calls last week, one for a hazardous condition, one activated fire alarm, one trash fire and one electrical fire.
