April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Putnam/Northern Westchester Women's Resource Center promotes awareness in local libraries

April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month. In an effort to promote awareness, the Women's Resource Center is hosting a bookmarks display in local public libraries. The bookmarks are designed to teach children how to distinguish the difference between safe and unsafe touching and urge them to confide in a trusted adult if they are touched in an inappropriate way or if they find themselves in an uncomfortable situation.

The displays were set up in the month of May at local libraries in the Putnam/Northern Westchester area. The displays encourage community

members to stay informed in order to help protect children against sexual molestation and assault. A selection of fiction, non-fiction and novel books relating to sexual and child abuse are displayed alongside brochures, handouts and the bookmarks from the Women's Center.

Parents and children visiting the libraries have an opportunity to view the display which serve as conversation starters and prompt parents to address the all too present topic of sexual assault and violence.

Founded in 1979, the Putnam/Northern Westchester Women's Resource Center, a

not for profit organization provides safety, education, counseling and advocacy services to help women and children heal and recover from the trauma of violence they have experienced or witnessed. The Center maintains a 24-hour hotline, (845) 6282166, offering information, emotional support, safety and referrals and a shelter for women and children who are victims of domestic violence or sexual assault.
