Kelly Hears Corporations' Voices More Than Voters'
Dear Editor:

Once again, Sue Kelly has shown a disconnect between what she says when she's home in the 19th CD, and what she does when she's back in Washington. This time, amazingly, she voted to reject a motion to prohibit interstate gambling by minors on the internet. Rep. Conyer's (D-MI) proposal would have amended the Internet Gambling Prohibition and Enforcement Act, H.R. 4411. Conyers' motion, which failed by a 167-243 vote, essentially along party lines, would have required a secure and effective customer identity verification system to assure compliance with applicable age and residence requirements. Rep. Conyers said in support of his motion "It makes sure that underage kids cannot gamble on the Internet, whether it is connection to interstate or intrastate betting...[T]o me, protecting children from being taken advantage of on the Internet is one of the most important things we can do as Members of the Congress."

As you may recall from articles in the news a couple of weeks ago, Sue Kelly voted to remove the requirement that all handguns be equipped with safety trigger locks. Now she continues her theme of "Let Every Child be Left Unprotected" by voting against the Conyers' proposal.

What merit could Sue Kelly possibly see in permitting gambling by children?

How could she possibly vote against safety locks which are known to save lives?

Maybe the answer to these questions lies in where the big money is not with the hardworking middle-class families of the 19th district, but in the huge corporations which make enormous contributions to political campaigns. It is those voices not ours that are heard when the time comes for Sue Kelly to vote.

It is time for us to elect someone who can be trusted to do the right thing to protect our families and children.
