Accidents Keep Emergency Service Personnel Busy in September Haunted House and Fire Prevention Week coming soon by Maria Theodore Leiter
Driving in Putnam County seemed to get more hazardous in the last two weeks of September. Local volunteers responded to nine different vehicular accidents. Most of those included injuries.
While accidents are commonplace on the Taconic State Parkway, most of the accidents in the past two weeks were on local roads. On September 10, The North Highlands Fire Department was called to the scene of a motorcycle crash on Route 301 near Dennytown Road.
"A 42-year old male and his 37-year old passenger were injured when he lost control of his motorcycle rounding a curve and slid into the guardrail," reported Fire Chief John Noschese. Fortunately, the two escaped with minor injuries, although they were transported to Hudson Valley Hospital Center by Philipstown Ambulance for evaluation.
On September 14, three accidents occurred on Route 9. At 6:46am, a 2-car collision on Fishkill Road brought out the NHFD. One of the vehicles rolled over onto its roof. Both male drivers were removed from their cars and transported by Philipstown Ambulance to HVHC. Fishkill Road was closed for an hour while emergency personnel worked to remove them and clear the roadway. Cold Spring Fire Department assisted with the road closure. At 7:53am, a car rear-ended an Empire Ambulance vehicle that was stopped at a stop sign on the corner of Route 9 and East Mountain Road South. Garrison Ambulance was dispatched to the scene under mutual aid, but there turned out to be no injuries. That same day, the Continental Village Fire Department responded to another accident on Route 9 in front of the 123 Deli.
An accident on Lake Surprise Road on September 17 prompted a police transport to jail instead of a hospital when the driver was found to be driving while intoxicated. According to Chief Noschese, the male driver was not injured in the accident. And, on September 29 the Putnam Valley Fire Department responded to a property damage accident in front of 348 Lake Shore Road. That accident was cleared in 30 minutes and there were no injuries. The same was not the case the next day when the PVFD responded to a call on Church Road, where one person had to be transported by the Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corp. to HVHC.
The Taconic saw three accidents in those weeks, one on 9/23 in which one patient was transported to the hospital, and two on 9/30, one where the PVFD put out a vehicle fire that was caused by an electrical malfunction and another in which the driver refused medical attention.
In the midst of all the accidents, a fire call at 57 Foundry Pond Road off Lake Surprise Road on September 16, required mutual aid assistance. The NHFD responded to the call and found smoke upon arrival. Incident Commander Chief Duane Sauve called for mutual aid. During the investigation, it was determined that the smoke emanated from a clothes dryer on the second floor. A sweater caught between the tub and shell of the washing machine caused the motor to short and created the smoky condition, according to Noschese. The mutual aid was canceled.
On September 24, the NHFD responded to a mutual aid call from the Rombout Fire District in Dutchess County. They provided an all-terrain vehicle to assist in bringing a heart attack victim out of the woods at the Snow Valley Campgrounds in Fishkill. The man was driving an ATV in the woods when he had the attack. He had to be carried in a basket up a steep hill to the waiting ATV and was transported to an ambulance.
NHFD also responded to two false alarms on September 10 and 18.
The Putnam Valley Fire Department conducted a smoke investigation on September 17 on Barger Street. They found that the smoke came from two outdoor furnaces. They also responded to a false alarm on September 22 and two calls for downed wires on September 25.
The Cold Spring Fire Department responded to two calls last week and 6 calls in the previous week. One was for smoke investigation, one involved a problem with a fireplace, three were false alarms and one involved investigating a carbon monoxide complaint. They also stood by at the Homecoming Bon Fire at Haldane last Friday night. In Garrison, firefighters responded to three false alarms. The Putnam Valley Ambulance Corps responded to 21 calls last week. On the fun side, local fire companies marched in the Putnam Valley Fire Department's 60th Anniversary Parade on Saturday.
"It was a nice day!" said Cold Spring Fire Chief Danny Valentine. His company won a trophy for Best Non-regulation Marching, 16 or less in line.
Local firefighters want to remind you that the week of October 9 through15 is Fire Prevention Week. They will be visiting local schools and daycare centers to teach children about fire safety.
Also, the Cold Spring Fire Department will hold its 2nd Annual Haunted House on Saturday October 27 and Sunday October 28. Bring the kids to the firehouse for a good scare.
