BOCES Tech Center Automotive Students Enjoy Spa Treatment from Cosmetology Students
As they've been doing annually for years, BOCES Tech Center students in the Automotive Program took time off from auto body work to enjoy a little "spa treatment" provided by Cosmetology students. Most had their nails groomed and many took advantage of the opportunity to get a free hair cut.
"It's a two-part program," explains Automotive teacher Matt Garrity. "It reinforces the need for my students to maintain their personal appearance even when working in a shop. And it helps them improve their communication skills which is also necessary when working in the business." While getting their nails done, the Automotive students must interview the
Cosmetology student and fill out a survey form with the information - name, school, work experience, aspirations, etc.- they learn.
At the same time, the Cosmetology students get realworld training and practice for their skills. It's literally a handson learning exercise.
While students took the exchange program seriously, there was a lot of laughter and goodnatured joking. As Lucy Pellegrino, a graduate of Hendrick Hudson High Schoo,l was buzzing the nape of Nate Powers' neck, the Carmel student asked her: "Have you ever cut a real person's hair before?" (The answer was "Yes," which made Nate smile.)
