Sheriff's Deputy Suspended After Arrest on Charges Relating to DMV

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that a Putnam County Deputy Sheriff has been suspended from duty following his arrest on a criminal charge. The deputy, Edward Moberg, aged 40, was arrested on Monday afternoon, October 9, 2006, by the New York State Police at Wappingers Falls, on a charge that he had filed a falsified document with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

The criminal investigation into Mr. Moberg's conduct began about seven months ago, when the Town of Kent Police Department received initial information about the suspected offense, conducted a preliminary investigation, and notified the Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff's Department, after learning that the alleged crime was perpetrated against a State agency and that it occurred in Dutchess County, and after consulting with the Putnam County District Attorney's Office, referred the case to the New York State Police.

Sheriff Smith suspended Mr. Moberg on October 10th, pending an administrative hearing on departmental charges stemming from the arrest. The suspension is without pay and is for a period of thirty days, in accordance with state civil service law. As of the time of publication, no date had been set for the hearing.

Mr. Moberg has been employed in the Sheriffs Department for approximately 18 years. Before his suspension, he was assigned to its Patrol Division.

The Sheriff said that he is unable to publicize specifics of the administrative charges against Mr. Moberg, citing a State law that prohibits public disclosure of pending disciplinary matters. The Sheriff is referring inquiries regarding the criminal charge to the Dutchess County.
