St. Mary's Invites Community to Lend Photos for Remembrance Service

St. Mary's Episcopal Church invites members of the community to loan photographs of their deceased loved ones for the fifth annual Service of Remembrance, to be held Sunday, Nov. 5th at 7pm.

For the service, the photos will be scanned into a computer program and projected on a screen. In addition to the photo collage, the event will include participants' placement of lighted candles on the altar in memory of loved ones. A small reception in the Parish Hall will follow the church service.

The parish is asking that all photos be submitted before October 25; that those in the photos, as well as those loaning them, be clearly listed on the back; and that a self-addressed return envelope be provided so the photos can be returned (undamaged) to the families providing them. The photographs can be dropped off at St. Mary's Rectory or mailed.

Those who submitted photos last year and wish to have them included again should notify the parish.

Father Shane Scott-Hamblen, rector of St. Mary's, developed the idea for a Remembrance montage when noticing that the Academy Awards show featured photos of actors and actresses who had died during the preceding year. Why not, he wondered, create something similar for the Cold Spring community?

"We wanted to honor our 'local heroes,' those who are the true 'celebrities' in our lives - people who made a difference in our families and community, and in some cases, in our nation and world," Fr. Shane said. "They deserve to be celebrated. So we remember them at a special time of year."

The Remembrance Service is held around the time of the Christian commemorations of All Saints' and All Souls' Days, Nov. 1st and 2nd, for saints officially recognized or canonized by the church as well as the countless individuals who led saintly lives but have gone largely unheralded.

Besides the Remembrance Day service, St. Mary's is active

in several community-oriented commemorative events over the course of the year. Working with local veterans, the parish has instituted a Memorial Day "Garden of Remembrance" on its Great Lawn in May, with hundreds of white crosses and stars of David to honor deceased veterans connected with the community. Father Shane and the parish also join in prayer services at the War Memorial on the edge of the lawn for Memorial Day, part of the annual community parade, and Veterans'Day in November.

Photos for the Nov. 5th montage can be sent to:
