Why won't Kelly Debate More Than Once? To the Editor:
Congressional candidate John Hall has offered to publicly debate Sue Kelly in each of the five counties in New York's 19th CD, but Mrs. Kelly has agreed to only one: in Warwick, NY, sponsored by the Orange County Farm Bureau, about agricultural issues and their effect on family-owned farms.
An upcoming candidates' forum hosted by the Poughkeepsie Area Chamber of Commerce is not open to the public and the candidates will not be given a chance to respond to their opponents' statements. Editorial board debates at the Journal News and Times Herald Record are not open to the public either and will not be televised. Voters aren't invited to attend the Cablevision debate in Wappingers Falls on October 30. Though the debate is to be re-broadcast numerous times before the election, it won't be available to those without cable TV service, like satellite TV customers.
Voters in Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties won't have any opportunities to hear Hall and Kelly publicly debate the issues-the war in Iraq, rising health care costs, protecting Social Security, energy independence and more.
Sue Kelly is our employee. We deserve to hear her response to her challenger's positions about all the issues of concern to her constituents and especially why she thinks she deserves reelection.
