Is Senator Leibell Using Taxpayer Money to Buy Votes? Dear Editor:
The story about Senator Leibell and Manitoga (PCN&R, Oct. 11, 2006) needs analysis. The story says that the senator "announced his award of a $20,000 Legislative Member Grant to Manitoga." The sentence should be amended to say that using his power as a state legislator, Senator Leibell dipped into the public treasury and gave away $20,000 of taxpayers' money without any public scrutiny. What is more a cynic might say that Senator Leibell is using taxpayer money to buy votes.
Unfortunately Senator Leibell's dipping talents are not exercised solely for his district. He has funneled $75,000 of taxpayer money to an upstate college that his children attend. What is more he is being asked to explain the millions, some say as much as $8 million dollars, in state funds that he has funneled to the Putnam Community Foundation that he just happens to have founded. When election day comes, I will do my bit to keep Senator Leibell in Carmel rather than let him get back to Albany with a renewed chance to perform who knows what good works and incidentally to buy more votes with my tax money.
