Emergency Services Visit St. Philip's Nursery School

| Serious subjects carefully explained were the topics for St. Philip's Nursery School students last week as fire trucks and the Garrison ambulance visited the preschool.
To teach fire safety, a team of firefighters consisting of, from Garrison, Wendy Heintz, Kevin Grafer, and Alan Simmons reviewed the basics of how to call 911 and how to stop, drop, and roll. Cold Spring Fire Department Chief Dan Valentine, a graduate of St. Philip's Nursery School, made a very dramatic impression as he showed the children how a firefighter suits up into protective gear, including oxygen tank and mask. The children also had the opportunity to visit the cab of a fire truck.
An ambulance can be a scarier sight for a three year old than a fire truck, but Captain Jerry Moore and past president David Lilburne helped the children feel right at home inside the Garrison vehicle.
As Captain Moore said, "The ambulance is your friend." The children tried on helmets, oxygen masks, and blood pressure cuffs with great enjoyment. Sammy Seward and Ben Felter, both of Cold Spring, volunteered to try out the "immobilizer," a piece of equipment used for transporting young children when they are injured. The final highlight for all was the flashing lights and sounding siren.
Both the Garrison and Cold Spring Fire Departments are volunteer organizations, and these individuals gave up their free time to come and help teach the children of St. Philip's about safety. Both organizations welcome new members.
St. Philip's Nursery School is a developmentally appropriate preschool serving three and four year old children in the Philipstown area.
