Putnam Valley Skaters Merge With JFK By Dillon Chesnut
Ice hockey is one of the few sports that requires more than special equipment and special skills. It requires a special environment: ice.
For people in Canada, Alaska, or Northern Europe, that doesn't present too much of a challenge. For those of us who live in warmer areas it means having to find an ice rink that we can afford, with hours that we can fit into our schedules. That's partly why the people who love ice hockey tend to really love it.
There is no shortage of ice hockey fans in Putnam Valley, but up until now there hasn't been enough interest-or players- to generate a school team. This winter, for the first time in its 6-year history, Putnam Valley High School will help to field a merged ice hockey team with another high school.
The PV players will be joining with players from JFK High School in Somers to form a combined team under the leadership of veteran coach Steve Santini, a familiar face at the Brewster Ice Arena, which is where practices and home games will be held.
The roster has not yet been finalized, but all of the seven or so boys who have shown an interest are current or former ice hockey players, some with many years of experience.
