Voting Machines a Non-Partisan, Citizenship Issue To the Editor:
In this year's election, Philipstown's turnout was 67% of registered voters - the highest percentage in Putnam County. The people of Philipstown truly believe in the power of their vote. Regardless of political affiliation, we want our votes counted accurately.
Therefore it is no surprise that Philipstown residents have been strongly urging our public officials - first the State Legislature and now the County Board of Elections - to be careful in the choice of voting machines for the voters of our County. We have overwhelmingly called for our Commissioners to choose paper ballots counted by optical scanners (PBOS), rather than touch screen electronic voting.
PBOS is more secure, more reliable, more accurate, and significantly more cost effective - the latter point increasing in importance since it looks as though New York State has forfeited the $50 million that had been allocated to the state for purchase of the new voting machines.
On Sunday, December 10 at 2pm, there will be a meeting - open to all - at Desmond Fish to watch a short film called "Bought and Sold" about the voting machine selection process in New York (come see some of our local officials on camera!) and then discuss what we can do to protect our voting rights. Please come. This isn't a partisan issue, it is a citizenship issue.
