Youngest Students Enjoy Thanksgiving Feast Day at Garrison School

The children in grades kindergarten through second grade gathered in the primary wing of the Garrison Union Free School on Monday, November 20th to share a special Thanksgiving feast together. The children, classroom teachers, and adult volunteers were honored to have Mrs. Stephanie Impellittiere, Garrison's Principal, join them for this annual celebration.

During the weeks leading up to the big event, the youngsters had the opportunity to learn about the Mayflower, its passengers, the Native Americans, and the importance of teamwork for the Pilgrim's success in the New World.

The children in Mrs. D'Onofrio's class displayed posters of turkeys which they had assembled as part of the home- school connection project for November outside of the classroom. Some of the turkeys were decorated with food items that made them look good enough to eat! The kindergarteners also focused on the Native American, Squanto, while discussing tolerance and an appreciation for other cultures.

The first grade classes in Mrs. Greene and Mrs. Martin's rooms enjoyed learning songs and poems for this special day. Thanksgiving selections, which were both fiction as well as nonfiction, were shared prior to the holiday celebration. The children were surprised to learn of the colorful clothing, special chores, as well as life goals that were required of the Pilgrim youngsters at an early age. The first graders had the opportunity to share their special fall posters prior to the feast with their peers. The children also tallied, graphed, and shared their favorite holiday food selections.

The team of Ms. Dodge and Ms. Wiese's second graders measured the length of the Mayflower to help the pupils to visualize how the Pilgrims and crew lived in tight quarters on the Mayflower. Second graders also wrote and illustrated their own books. The second graders wrote My Little

Book of Thanks to share with their classmates. The youngsters also constructed an art project of Grateful Gobblers.

The primary teachers would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parent and community volunteers who helped to make our feast day such a success! The staff members truly appreciated all the goodies as well as "extra hands" that were kept quite busy that day. The Garrison teachers and support staff hope to expand the Character Education curriculum by continuing to focus upon gratitude, appreciation, cooperation, problem solving, and community spirit during the holiday season. Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season!
