North Highlands Fire District Residents Vote Down Building Referendum Good Samaritan pulls man from overturned vehicle on Route 9 by Maria Theodore Leiter
Dreams of a new firehouse for the North Highlands Fire Department were extinguished last week when Fire District voters defeated the $5.7 million bond referendum by a vote of 214 to 161. The proposal would have enabled the department to replace the current metal structure, which is located on Fishkill Road, with a four-bay brick-and-mortar building. The vote, which would have meant an additional $146 per year in taxes for district residents, came on the heels of double-digit tax increase announcements by the County and Town governments. Last month, voters in Garrison also voted down a referendum put forth by their fire department.
“It was disappointing, but we will continue to pursue this to a positive solution,” commented Deputy Chief John Noschese, adding that the department appreciated the support of 161 residents who voted ‘yes’.
Recent calls for the NHFD included a serious accident on Route 9 in front of Shubert’s garage at 3am on November 30. According to Noschese, the driver fell asleep at the wheel as he was driving north. He apparently drifted into the south-bound shoulder and up an embankment where he struck a tree and rolled the vehicle over onto its roof. The male driver was trapped inside the vehicle, but was rescued by a passing motorist. He was transported by Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Saint Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie. Fortunately, the man recovered and was released two days later.
On December 5, they were again dispatched to a personal injury accident on Route 9, this time at East Mountain Road South. Two vehicles were involved. One was attempting to cross Route 9, when a vehicle traveling South on Route 9 tried to avoid it, but struck the left fender and ended up in a ditch. The driver of the vehicle that was struck suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital by PVAC.
East Mountain Road was the site of another accident on December 8. Two vehicles were again involved and an injured person was transported to Westchester Medical Center by PVAC.
The NHFD also responded to several fire alarm calls last week, none of which turned out to be structure fires.
Meanwhile, the Putnam Valley Fire Department began December by responding to three separate personal injury accidents on the Taconic State Parkway on December 1. On December 8, they were called to put out a vehicle fire on the TSP. Other calls included a brush fire on Oscawana Lake Road and Cimarron Road on December 9, the investigation of a possible fire on Lake Drive, an investigation of a carbon monoxide detector alarm on Point Drive South and a call to help EMS workers lift a patient into the ambulance.
The PVFD also announced the launch of their new website. Information and news from the fire department can be viewed online at www.putnamvalleyfire.com. There is also a link to this and all the fire and ambulance company websites on the PCN&R website at www.pcnr.com.
The Garrison Volunteer Ambulance Corps. and the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement held their fourth annual Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, raising money to benefit the Philipstown Food Pantry, the Children’s Holiday Wish List and Holiday Food Baskets. The event, which was held at Graymoor, was well attended.
GVAC responded to 6 medical calls last week and 2 personal injury auto accidents.
The Cold Spring Fire Department will host Breakfast with Santa on Sunday, December 17 from 8am to 11am. They will also escort Santa around the Villages on that day. The North Highlands Fire Department will also be escorting him around their neck of the woods. Santa will be taken around Putnam Valley by the PVFD on Saturday, December 16 starting at 9am at the Lake Peekskill parking lot. The schedule of stops was printed in last week’s PCN&R.
