PV Cub Scout Pack Donates 896 Books to Kids without Books in Bronx Elementary School
by Edward Paul Greiff

(l-r) are Scouts Alec McDonald, Scountmaster Richard Chizzik, Timothy Chizzik, Satoshi Abe, Tristian Merlino, John Palicz, Salvatore Lapecarella of Den 2 along with books they collected.
On Friday, December 8, 2006 the Putnam Valley Wolf Cub Scout Pack 53 Den 2 turned over 896 books they collected as part of their community service project to Kelly Swansen a Putnam Valley resident and teacher, for her elementary school students at PS 306 in the Bronx.

Seven-year-old Timothy Owen Chizzik found out from his neighbor Kelly Swansen that her students did not have enough money to buy fun books to read, and being a kid who likes to read, Timothy thought this was horrible and came up with the idea to collect books and give them to the kids in need. His mother, Jeanette Chizzik and Scoutmaster Father Richard Chizzik organized it as a Community Service project for their Cub Scout group.

In an exclusive interview with Timothy, we learned first-hand how his community service idea mushroomed into a book collection campaign that generated 896 books for distribution to the south Bronx elementary school. The Putnam Valley Cub Scouts, ages seven and eight, sent home flyers announcing their drive for books and posted flyers around their elementary school. Timothy related how he was the only boy to speak about the program before the PTA. Collection boxes were placed at the Putnam Valley Elementary School and at Town Hall. The books started coming in at the rate of fifty a day and the collection boxes had to be emptied daily.

Young Chizzik had a good handle on the number and types of books collected. He said they collected sixty-five Babysitter Club books, twenty-five Magic Tree House books, and only one Pokéman book because “they are hard to get,” he told the PCN&R.

The project was a huge success and from the look on the faces of the Cub Scouts you can tell they also enjoyed doing it. Their project exemplifies the true meaning of the phrase, “it is more blessed to give than receive.”
