Young Naturalists Donate Care Packages For Wildlife
The Young Naturalist Pre-K classes at the Museum of the Hudson Highlands decided to make a pre-holiday gift to help those who help wildlife. So, this month, the Young Naturalists and their parents prepared baskets of donated blankets, towels, gloves, food, bandages, heating pads and animal carriers for wildlife rehabilitators in our area.
When the children were ready to present their gifts, Pam Golben, a New York State Licensed wildlife rehabilitator, visited the classes and introduced the Young Naturalists to a rescued Screech Owl. The Eastern Screech Owl, injured in a motor vehicle accident, was taken to a vet and had a broken wing. Her wing would not heal even after extensive rehabilitation.
Ms. Golben explained how the Screech Owl lives at the Museum because she can no longer fly and take care of herself. The children learned that in New York, a wildlife rehabilitator must receive training and a license to help injured wildlife. They also discussed how some of the items in the donated baskets would be used for the care of animals. The Screech Owl concluded the Young Naturalists unit on caring for the earth.
The Young Naturalists Pre- K Program runs from September to June for three and four year olds. An open house for the 2006-07 will be held February 6, For further information, call 845-534-5506, ext. 204.
