Putnam Valley Man Accused of Making up Stolen Car Story to Conceal Crash

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the December 6, 2006 arrest of a Putnam Valley man who allegedly tried to conceal a car crash by falsely reporting that the vehicle had been stolen. John J. Oitice, aged 23, of Putnam Valley, is charged with falsely reporting an incident.

The Sheriff reports that at about 11:36am on Wednesday, December 6th, Mr. Oitice went to the Sheriff’s Office headquarters in Carmel and told deputies that an unknown thief had taken his car, a 2006 Acura, earlier that morning. Mr. Oitice claimed that the car disappeared from the driveway of his home at about 9:30am and that, later, a friend called him and reported finding the car, abandoned and damaged, in a park in Peekskill. Deputy Alfano, working with Sheriffs Investigator Jeffrey Devolve, investigated and found several discrepancies in Mr. Oitice’s story. Ultimately, it was determined that Mr. Oitice had crashed his car shortly after leaving a bar in Cortlandt in the early morning hours of December 6th and, rather than reporting his accident, the defendant allegedly concocted the theft story to conceal how the car was damaged.

Deputy Alfano charged Mr. Oitice with Falsely Reporting an Incident, a class A misdemeanor. That offense carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. The deputy booked and released the defendant on his own recognizance pending a December 19th appearance in the Town of Carmel Justice Court.
