Sheriff’s Cadets Toy Drive in Fortieth Year

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Cadets’ Annual Christmas Toy Drive is underway, making this the fortieth consecutive year of the Drive. Sheriff Smith reports that the teenaged cadets, working in coordination with the Putnam County Department of Social Services (“DSS”), and the Putnam County Community Action Program (“CAP”), are asking Putnam County residents to donate toys and gifts for needy children in Putnam County.

The cadets are helping to collect and sort donated toys and gifts for delivery to underprivileged youngsters throughout the County during the Christmas and Hanukah holidays. The cadets distribute the gifts directly to disadvantaged children and to various social service agencies operating within the County; those agencies, in turn, arrange for ultimate delivery of the gifts to the needy families they serve.

Last year, through the generosity of donors and the efforts of the cadets and cooperating

agencies, over 3,000 toys and gifts were distributed to some 892 children, giving them a brighter and happier holiday season.

The cadets are seeking donations of new, unwrapped toys or gifts for children between the ages of newborn and 18 years of age. Donors are invited to drop off items at the Sheriffs Office headquarters, located off Fair Street in Carmel, at the Town of Kent Police Department, located on Route 52 in Kent, at the Community Action Program Headquarters, located at 121 Main Street in Brewster, or any branch of the Putnam County National Bank. Donations should be dropped off no later than December 20, 2006, to ensure delivery to the children in time for the holidays.

Speaking on behalf of the cadets, Sheriff Smith expressed gratitude to County residents for the compassion and generosity displayed in past drives and asked for their continued support in this year’s program.
