Putnam Valley Middle School Students Reap Lions Club Poster Contest Honors

Putnam Valley Middle School (PVMS) is happy to announce that the winning entries in the Lions Club’s 2006 Peace Poster Contest were created by PVMS students Robert Tendy (grand prize winner), Doris Baclija, Maria Rao, Kyle Marks, Melissa Steen, and Carl Fristrom.

PV Lions Club representative Maureen McLaughlin announced this week, “We would like to celebrate by inviting the winners and their parents to our next Lions club meeting on Thursday, December 14, at 6:30pm at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) building on Oscawana Lake Road, so that we can present their certificates and enjoy refreshments together.”

In addition, Ms. McLaughlin will make a presentation at the school (date and time to be announced), with certificates for all of the entrants: Mace Coleman, Kate Baumann, Alissabeth Minnich, Nicole Belen, Danielle Alba, Jonathan Helm, Hugh McCann, Thomas Faraone, Kyle Fitzsimmons, Kelly Brown, Marissa Gonzalez, Alexis Lussier, Richie Gonzalez, Jessica Spiegel, Ashley Riley, Tyler Schaber, Michael Vendetti, Mariah Fontane, Gina Castro, and Gabrielle Honors.

According to the Lions Clubs International website at www.lionsclubs.org, the Lions Club Peace Poster contest is an international effort. “‘Celebrate Peace’ is the theme of the 2006- 07 Peace Poster Contest. Lions clubs can sponsor the program in their community for children in local schools or organized, sponsored youth groups. Students, ages 11, 12 or 13 on November 15, 2006, are eligible to participate. Through the contest, students are encouraged to visually depict their interpretation of the contest’s theme.

Each poster is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme. Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners.”

The international winning poster will be displayed at the UN on March 2007 as part of the Lions Club International Lions Day celebration.
