Putnam Valley Elementary School Fourth Graders Visit Howe Caverns, Albany

On November 10th, Lin Butter’s fourth grade class at Putnam Valley Elementary School (PVES) was part of a grade-wide trip to upstate New York. According to Ms. Butter, “the following story was written collectively by my class. It was a group of lessons designed to teach essay structure.”

The Fourth Grade Trip to Howe Caverns and the New York State Museum

by Ms. Butter’s class

Our class took an amazing trip to Howe Caverns and the New York State Museum in Albany. The rock formations at Howe Caverns were fabulous, fantastic and fascinating. At the New York State Museum in Albany, the Native American exhibits were also fascinating and realistic. Other exhibits in the New York State Museum in Albany were interesting and lifelike. In our opinion both Howe Caverns and the New York State Museum were part of the best field trip ever.

We saw rock formations at Howe Caverns and they were just wonderful. There were many rock formations that took forms like animals. One of our favorite rock formations was the Godzilla head. Last of all there was a tiny stalactite that looked like a dead mouse. We are enthusiastically glad we got to see such beautiful and funny rock formations. The Native American exhibits

at the New York State Museum in Albany were outstanding. The longhouse felt like we were there, in their time. Also the model of the Native American village was so real looking in miniature. Furthermore, the Three Sisters exhibit looked so realistic, when they were bending to plant their corn, beans and squash. It was very interesting to see the Native American exhibits at the New York State Museum.

The other exhibits in the New York State Museum were fantastic. We had never before seen so many fascinating New York State birds. On the old New York City subway train, the wax figures were really life-like. Last of all we were really sad when we saw the 9/11 exhibit, particularly, the fireman’s helmet that was burned and crumpled. There was a lot of powerful emotion in sections of the Museum.

This was the most emotional trip we have ever been on. In Howe Caverns we were so curious and excited about the beautiful rocks, waterfalls, stalagmites and stalactites. Some exhibits in the New York State Museum were scary, some were upsetting and others were fun to look at. As we loaded the buses to go home, we couldn’t help but feel sad because we learned so much from this amazing trip.
