Putnam District Attorney Announces Retirement

Putnam County District Attorney Kevin L. Wright has announced that he intends to retire as District Attorney at the end of 2007. Wright said next year will represent his 20th year as Putnam’s District Attorney, a position he has sincerely enjoyed but noted that for some time now he has been looking forward to other career challenges.

Wright expressed pride in the work of his Office over the years since he was elected in 1987 as one of the State’s youngest District Attorneys at age 37. Wright said that his programs to help victims, especially children in the legal system were among the things of which he was most pleased. The District Attorney said he and his staff had built a solid record in the County’s most serious cases at trial and throughout the appeals process as well.

District Attorney Wright also expressed great satisfaction at having been influential in many local and statewide matters of importance. At the local level things such as the dramatic decline of Putnam DWI’s while serving as STOP DWI Coordinator; the creation of the Putnam Child Advocacy Center; establishment of the Drug and Alcohol Court; Putnam’s Amber Alert program; the Child Sexual Abuse Task Force; a vigorous Anti-Domestic Violence program; and Putnam’s Child Fatality Review Team. At the state level for the past six years Wright helped to shape legislation and to create a permanent presence in Albany through the acquisition of a headquarters building for the NYS District Attorneys Association, serving as its Vice- President, President, and then Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Mr. Wright said in addition to his seventeen years in the private practice of law in Mahopac that his public service career since 1975 as a prosecutor for Westchester and Putnam, then Putnam legislator and then Putnam’s District Attorney had been very satisfying. It presented the opportunity to try murder cases, argue appeals, make laws, teach other lawyers, and to write and be published on legal issues.

Wright, now age 56, said he had made no commitments regarding the career choices he intended pursue after leaving next year as District Attorney but was excited and enthusiastic. He also expressed thanks and gratitude for his staff, some of whom had been with him since he took office as District Attorney. Wright expressed appreciation to Putnam’s public safety community, both past and present, with whom he has worked for more than thirty years keeping Putnam one of the safest communities in America.
