Children’s Christmas Victorian Tea and Games at Mt. Gulian During School Break
Mount Gulian Historic Site, Route 9D, Beacon, invites children and adults to its Children’s Christmas Victorian Tea and Games, Wednesday, December 27th from noon until 2pm.
The tradition of Victorian ladies and their gentlemen meeting in the afternoons for tea and conversation was popular at many Hudson Valley homes, including Mount Gulian, home of the Verplanck family. Teatime at Mount Gulian was held mid-afternoon with the menu consisting of small cakes, crust-less sandwiches, assorted sweets, and of course, tea. Either held in the drawing room or outdoors, this time with friends invariably would conclude with a walk in Mrs. Verplanck’s well-known, abundant garden.
Guests attending the Children’s Tea will be served the above-mentioned traditional menu as well as milk, a popular beverage today but not so
in earlier times because of bacteria and the lack of refrigeration. Additionally, young guests will be invited to play games, including “Jack be Nimble”, which is based on the nursery rhyme that is often misconstrued as jumping over a candle. The fact is that women, after dipping candles, would hang them from horizontal sticks to allow them to cool and harden. These sticks, not the candles themselves, were referred to as “candle sticks”.
Introduce a new tradition to your holidays by attending Mount Gulian’s Tea and Games with your children, relatives or little friends. It’s fun, informative and a great way to occupy their time during school break. Pre-paid reservations are required by December 26th. The cost is $8 for adults; and $5 for children. For more information call 831-8172. Directions may be found at www.mountgulian.org.
