Results Of NYS Standardized Tests Need to be Released Sooner To the Editor:
It is of concern to local school boards and our communities that the results of NY State required standardized English and Math tests, administered last January and March, have only recently been distributed.
To suggest that we find this situation objectionable is an understatement. If the State’s policy of assessing student achievement is to have meaning, it’s absolutely critical that there be timely results so that appropriate and required academic interventions may be quickly initiated.
To require and hold school districts accountable while simultaneously tying their hands is unfair, unjust, and unfortunately, all too common behavior from the NY State Education Department. State Ed needs to be accountable for this inordinate delay, and accept responsibility and explain how it will fix the problem. The cycle of English and Math tests begins again next month. It will be inexcusable if this harm to our students is repeated.
