Mark Forlow Shares his Knowledge of WWII with Haldane Sixth Graders

Mark Forlow (father of 6th grader Matt ) shared his fascination and extensive knowledge about World War II with Haldane 6th graders. The students have been reading The Cay by Theodore Taylor that is set in the Caribbean in 1942, during WWII. Mr. Forlow read the book with his son and offered to share his enthusiasm about WWII with the students.

He showed the students some of his collection of WWII memorabilia including rationing books, helmets and shadowboxes of medals. Mr. Forlow explained about rationing. He told the children about rationing petroleum products so that they could be used in the war

effort. Stockings and make-up were not available to women during the war time because of this. He also talked about Victory Gardens. Mr. Forlow discussed the fact that WWII opened up a whole new world for women since they had to join the work force to fill in for the men at war. When the men returned there were many difficult transitions for everyone.

Mr. Forlow’s knowledge and enthusiasm made WWII come alive for the children. He was a mesmerizing speaker and gave the students lots of things to think about. WWII has now become a major topic of discussion for 6th grade students.
