PVMS Middle Schoolers Receive Books Courtesy Of P.V. Rotary

Putnam Valley Middle School (PVMS) fifth graders received a special visit on December 15th as members of the Putnam Valley Rotary Club arrived with cartons full of brand new thesauruses to present to each student.

The Rotary representatives were President Robert Walker, Vice President Carl Sandberg, Past District Governor Joseph Seiler, and active member Virginia Dorn. In addition to the Rotarians, Superintendent of Schools Gary Tutty, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Barbara

Fuchs, Principal Edward Hallisey, and Assistant Principal Dr. David Fine were in attendance, along with a room full of happy fifth grade students and their teachers.

Following a few informal remarks and a group “photo op,” the children lined up to receive their books from one of the four Rotary representatives. The young people practiced their “take and shake” technique: shaking hands with their right hands, and receiving their thesauruses with their left hands. Cheerful “thank yous” accom- panied the handshakes.

This is the second year that the PV Rotary has visited PV schools with book donations. Last winter they gave dictionaries to third graders at the PV Elementary School, and will repeat that visit for a new crop of third graders in early January. This program is the brainchild of Mr. Walker, who said that a friend of his, the president of the Jersey City Rotary organization, had overseen Rotary dictionary distributions to Jersey City third graders for a number of years.
