Haldane Visits Oxygen Network Courtesy of Manitoga

On December 5, 2006, Haldane teachers Rick Meunier and Eric Richter took a group of 12 students on a tour of the Oxygen television network, located in the Chelsea section of Manhattan.

The students received a multimedia presentation on promotions and previewed several of the network’s programs. In addition, various department heads led discussions focusing on public relations and national cable market sales. A comprehensive tour of the editing room, with all of its high tech equipment, was also included.

During the course of the visit, the students had the opportunity to ask many questions about college and career choices, as well as internship experiences. They were told that media companies today hire staff in a wide range of specialties, including graphic design, public relations, sales, technology and management.

The students were treated to lunch from Patsy’s Restaurant

and, before leaving, each student received a media bag filled with various items typically distributed to clients. Prominently featured was the “OH” logo, which served to underscore the importance of branding as a means of reinforcing corporate recognition.

The group was comprised of Micah Parker, Caitlin Derry, Lauren Monroe, Krista Donovan, Mary Murphy, Tess Lundgardh, Carly Filmanski, Kelsey Kolins, Gabrielle Gerard, Sara D’emic, Stefan Jimenez and Brendan Galvin.

The trip to Oxygen was donated by the network to Manitoga/The Russel Wright Design Center as a live auction item for their Annual Awards Benefit Luncheon last October. The winning bidders, Manitoga Co-Presidents Andrew Capitman and Margaret Doyle, in turn donated the trip to Haldane in hopes that students considering careers in the communications field could gain valuable insights.
