Driver ejected from car in accident on 9D
by Maria Theodore Leiter

On December 15, 2006, a driver was ejected from his vehicle after he ran it into a tree while driving on Route 9D, north of the Village.

“By the looks of it, it should have been a fatality,” remarked Cold Spring Fire Department Chief Dan Valentine, “but I heard he was already out of the hospital.”

Both the Cold Spring Fire and Police Departments responded to the accident scene. The driver, who was seriously injured, was given Advanced Life Support by the Putnam County Medic, who also attended the call. He was transported to the Westchester Medical Center.

The Cold Spring Fire Department had a total of four calls in the month of December; the others were for activated fire and carbon monoxide alarms.

The CSFD also held its annual Election Dinner on December 8. Joeseph Russo was elected Chief of the Department. Thomas Merrigan will serve as Assistant Chief. Christopher Tobin is the new Department Captain for 2007. Three Lieutenants were elected, they are Matthew Steltz, Nicole Miozzi and Robert Downey. Wayne Rudolph was elected Captain of Fire Police.

J.Ralph Falloon is the new President of the Company. Also elected were: Vice President Matthew Amato; Treasurer George Tompkins; Secretary Vincent Cimino and Financial Secretary Ari Straus.

Outgoing Chief Danny Valentine, who could not hold the Chief’s position for more than 2 years successively, said that his term had been a learning experience. “I am glad that I have been given the chance to serve my Company and Community. Now its back to being a Firefighter, which I am really looking forward too.” Valentine will continue to serve the Company as a member of the Board of Directors.

The Putnam Valley Fire Department elected its firematic and company officers for the 2007 on December 12th at its annual meeting. Bruce Johnson will be the Chief of the Department for 2007. He will be assisted by 1st Ass’t Chief Adam Savino and 2nd Ass’t Chief Louis Luongo. Also elected were David Lussier, Captain, Shawn Keeler, First Lieutenant. Brandon Gembecki, David Anderson and Joe Velardo were elected Second Lieutenants.

Larry Cobb was elected the President of the Company. The following were also elected for the PV FD Company: Marvin Keeler, Vice President; Francine Tansey, Treasurer; Charles Eckholm, Financial Secretary and Anne Spoonhour, Recording Secretary.

The Garrison Volunteer Ambulance Corp. installed new officers for 2007 this month. They are President Venetia Heinz, Vice President Lisa Kay, Captain Jerry Moore, Secretary Patti Smith, Treasurer Dan Mcavoy, Trustees David Cashman, and Bill Smith. Also, Justin Herminghouse was elected Communications Officer, Mary and Lou Arceo were named Training Officers. Derek Tudor Jr. will serve as First Lieutenant, and Justin Herminghouse will be Second Lieutenant. The North Highlands Fire Department will elect its 2007 officials on January 4, 2007 at its annual organization meeting, planned for 7pm.

On the activities log for the month of December, the GVAC responded to 6 medical calls and 2 personal injury auto accidents early in the month.

The Garrison Volunteer Fire Department responded to four calls during the week of December 10. They were called out to a very large unattended control burn on Route 9D and Upper Station Road. They called the New York State Department of Conservation Police to the scene for assistance in keeping under control the fires that were deliberately set to burn brush. They were also called to standby for a possible structure fire in Continental Village. No fire was discovered. They were also called out to an automatic alarm that was set off at St. Christopher’s Inn and to a gas leak on Avery Road.

During the previous week, GVFD responded to three calls. On December 5, there was a two-car accident on Route 9 near Route 403. One person was transported to the hospital. A second accident took place on December 10 on Route 9 at the Graymoor entrance. It involved two vehicles and only minor injuries. They were also called to Graymoor on that day to rescue two people who were stuck on a malfunctioning elevator. The incident took place during the GVAC Pancake Breakfast that was taking place in the dining room at Graymoor on that morning. The elevator was stuck between the fourth and fifth floors.

The Putnam Valley Fire Department had a very busy December, responding to five separate accidents on the Taconic State Parkway through December 17, and two on local Putnam Valley roads, one on Mill Street and Peekskill Hollow Road on December 10, and the other on Bryant Pond Road near Wood Street.

On December 9, they responded to a brush fire on Oscawana Lake Road and Cimmaron Road and also to a vehicle fire on Dring Lane. An automatic alarm at 226 Canopus Hollow Road also brought them out on that same day.

They put a fire out at a storage shed on Tanglewylde Road on December 10. The fire company participated in three EMS lift assists, one on December 5, and two on December 10. On the 11th, they were called to do a smoke investigation on Marsh Hill Road. They were also called to a brush fire on Barger Street and Park Drive on that same day.
