Chamber Music Series at West Point Continues with Saxophone Recital

The United States Military Academy Band continues its chamber music series on Sunday, January 21st at 3pm with a recital of music for saxophone and piano. Staff Sergeant Brian Broelmann will perform a varied program of works for saxophone, accompanied by Mr. Danniel Spiegel in West Point's Jewish Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.

Staff Sergeant Broelmann has chosen a program which will highlight the diversity of works available to the concert saxophonist. The recital will feature two works transcribed for saxophone and piano. Maurice Ravel's Piece en forme de Habanera, arranged for soprano saxophone and piano, will open the performance. Ralph Vaughan Williams' Six Studies in English Folk Song, arranged for alto saxophone and piano, will close the program. Both pieces are representative of the more lyrical approach to the saxophone that has been favored by a number of interpreters over time. These works will be contrasted with the remainder of the program.

Christian Lauba's Tadj, for solo soprano saxophone, is a concert etude that explores the more exotic and virtuosic sounds attainable on the soprano saxophone. Danniel Spiegel will also join Staff Sergeant Broelmann for a performance of Leslie Bassett's Duo Concertante. This is a multi-movement work in which the alto saxophone and piano assume roles of equal importance, utilizing a unique interplay between voices. The most adventurous work on the program is French composer Jean- Claude Risset's Voilemente for Tenor Saxophone and Electronic Tape. The work explores the interaction of live saxophonist with processed acoustic sounds on tape.

Please allow extra travel time for the 100% vehicle and photo I.D. inspection at Stony Lonesome and Thayer gates.
