New Year Sees Medivac Helicopters Put to Use in Western Putnam County
Small fire put out by CS Firefighters at former Fairgate Rule building
by Maria Theodore Leiter

The Route 9 accident on January 5 resulted in all occupants being taken to the hospital
For the Cold Spring Fire Company, 2007 began with a call to a structure fire on Adams Avenue in a building recently vacated by the Fairgate Rule Company, manufacturers of rulers, scales and other precision measurement devices. Fairgate had been at that location since 1946, but recently moved to Rhinebeck, NY. The building was being cleared out when a small fire occurred.

"Upon arrival of Chief Joe Russo it was determined that workers in the building were dismantling equipment when a fire started accidentally amongst an old pile of lacquer," reported former CSFD Chief Dan Valentine. "The fire was brought quickly under control by Cold Spring firefighters."

The CSFD was assisted at the scene by the North Highlands Fire Dept, Putnam County Sheriff's Department, Philipstown Ambulance and Putnam Medic 1.

That same day, the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded to an accident in which a vehicle hit a tree on Peekskill Hollow Road. The driver refused medical attention and suffered no apparent injuries.

Such good fortune was not the case on January 2, when a seriously injured motorcycle driver was brought to Westchester Medical Center by Medivac Helicopter. The NHFD was called to the scene, where the motorcycle was wrapped around a utility pole.

According to Deputy Chief John Noschese, the motorcycle traveling on Route 301 slid off the road near Dennytown Road. The driver was thrown off the vehicle, while the motorcycle continued down the shoulder, hitting the pole. Stat Flite Helicopter transported the driver, who suffered serious leg injuries, to Westchester Medical Center. The patient was transported to the landing zone by Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Another serious accident that took place on Route 9 on January 5 required the assistance of many of the local first responders. The North Highlands Fire Department was the lead agency dispatched to the scene, where a single vehicle ran head-on into a tree on the property of the Post Road Mobile Park near Travis Corners Road.

Three occupants, two elderly gentlemen in the front and a nurse in the back seat, were seriously injured, according NHFD Deputy Chief John Noschese. The 75-year-old driver was easily removed from the vehicle and brought by Philipstown Ambulance to the Westchester Medical Center. The two passengers had to be extricated by the Jaws-of-Life and were flown by two separate Medivac helicopters to Westchester Medical Center. All three survived the incident, but are being treated for serious injuries.

The CSFD was called in to set up a landing zone for the helicopters, the Putnam County Sheriff's Department assisted with the necessary road closure, and Garrison Volunteer Ambulance Corps was also called in for mutual aid.

These were not the only accidents in Philipstown last week. Two more took place on January 5. The NHFD was dispatched to both. A minor two-car accident at the corner of Routes 9 and 301 at lunch time led to an injured woman being brought to the hospital by Philipstown Ambulance. Two hours later, another one-car accident took place on Fishkill Road by the Cold Spring Reservoir. A female driver apparently lost control on the turn in the rain and hit the embankment. She refused medical attention.

The PVFD was also called to investigate a complaint of the smell of natural gas in the air around Oregon Corners. Deputy Chief Adam Savino said that the odor had already dissipated when firefighters arrived. They found no leaks or cause for the odor. Later that week, the company responded to a call for a possible structure fire on Lee Avenue. Investigators found smoke was caused by a malfunctioning oil burning furnace, not a fire.
