Veterans' Groups Send Christmas Gifts to Active Service Men and Women
by Phil Schatzle, VFW Commander

For the past four years the VFW and the American Legion have been sending gifts to active servicemen in Iraq , Afghanistan, the United States and other parts of the world. These gifts, supporting our troops, have consisted of phone cards, gift cards, and packages from parents.

This year both organizations sent Post Exchange cards from West Point, pictures of downtown, Cold Spring, the Hudson River, and a letter of support. Peggy Schatzle's Kindergarten class at Roaring Brook Elementary School also enclosed class pictures, a letter of support from their teacher, art work, and personal notes from each member of the class. These certainly were a big hit with the troops.

Funds for this project were provided by our Remembrance Project with St. Mary's Episcopal Church and Sam's Club in Fishkill. In Philipstown we had fifteen service men and women that we sent our packages to - quite a large number, considering our small population. The packages all arrived by December 20th.

Those serving our country who received our gift were: Sgt. Geoff Barnes, LT. Matthew DiVico, CWO Richard Valentine, Sgt David Allen, CWO Tony Mazzuca, CWO Robert Nieves, LT. Jennifer Neville, Sgt Gary Watkins, CWO Kevin Watkins, LT. Bruce Bodge, LT. Brian Bodge, Capt. Joseph Mark, Capt Joe Luchetta, Sgt. Joshua Montero and Nick Vetere.

Please remember these brave individuals in your thoughts and prayers. The VFW and American Legion will have other projects supporting our soldiers, sailors, marines, and coast guards. Parents or friends who also have servicemen and women but who are not listed above and would like to be included in our efforts should contact Phil Schatzle at 265-2506.
