Teens From Our Lady Of Loretto Show Spirit of Christmas

On the Eve of Christmas Eve, Saturday December 23rd, over twenty-five teenagers and adult supervisors from Our Lady of Loretto Parish gathered to spread some Christmas cheer. For the past ten years, thanks to the past efforts of Christine Clinton and Janice and Peter DiNatale, the Our Lady of Loretto Youth Ministry group, "God's TYM" has sponsored Giving Trees at the Parish Church and Garrison Chapel.

This year under the new leadership of Denise Mackey, they youth group collected hundreds and hundreds of beautifully wrapped toys and gifts donated by the generosity of the parishioners. From dolls to games, puzzles to race cars, the toys and clothing accumulated around the Advent Wreath in the Church for the weeks before Christmas. On December 17th the teenagers sorted the gifts into groups for boys and girls and then by appropriate ages and filled huge sacks with these gifts. Yet the gifts kept coming, necessitating more sorting and bagging on December 23rd. The Youth Group also collected brand new hats, gloves and scarves for the needy of Newburgh.

A little after noon on the Eve of Christmas Eve, a caravan of 6 SUVs, cars and trucks left the church parking lot bound for Our Lady of Comfort Shelter on Ann Street in the city of Newburgh filled to the brim with bags of gifts a cheerful givers. It was estimated that over one hundred families awaited their arrival. The merry little group helped to distribute the gifts to the many people waiting patiently. They all came away with an appreciation for all that they have (which they may sometimes been taken for granted) and with a greater understanding of the needs of the poor, even those close to home in the Hudson Valley. Members of the entire Philipstown community should be proud of the good works performed by these young men and women.

Those participating included Graham Rice, Chloe Rice, Faye Rice, Mary Rice, Tommy Des Marais, Greg Casement, Stephen Casement, Susan Casement, Gordon Casement, John Kearns, Frankie Fusco, Chris Ryan, Paul Mackey, Rosie Mackie, Camille Mackey, Paul Mackey, Anne Marie DiFrancesco, Brianna DiFrancesco, Ray DiFrancesco, John Scherer, Joe Scherer, Peter Scherer, Liz Scherer, Pat Tilearcio and Lillian Moser.
