An Open Community Discussion about Iraq
To the Editor:

By the time this letter is published, President Bush will have made his proposal regarding his future plans for United States involvement in Iraq.

The results of the November 2006 election revealed a public strongly critical of the United States involvement in Iraq. President Bush's approval ratings are at an all time low.

We are in general agreement as a country that change is required, but there are many different opinions on what is the best plan. Many hold the view that there is no good solution, and that our concern should be primarily with reducing the unnecessary death of US military personnel.

It is time for the American people to start a dialogue about Iraq and the Middle East, and to express those views to our elected officials. We need to tell them how we want them to react to the President's plan.

In the interest of starting that dialogue in our area, Philipstown for Democracy is sponsoring an open forum on Iraq, to be held Sunday, January 14 at 2pm in the St. Mary's Church Parish House in Cold Spring. Everyone in the community is encouraged to attend. We hope that a variety of points of view are represented. There will be no formal speeches, and no "experts". Background materials will be provided, and then the floor will be open for discussion. Come to speak, listen and learn.
