County Will Save Tax Dollars With Use of Marathon Property (reprinted at the request of the author) Dear Mr. Bondi,
I read in the recent Putnam County News the article about the Legislature's approval to settle the Marathon Battery Property lawsuit which includes parking for the village, a much needed community center for its residents, and a solution to a long and drawn out legal battle between the village, county and developer of the Marathon property. We need the parking. That is a given.
Business was down this year, which of course was reflected in Sales Tax revenue. Parking will help re-invigorate the businesses in Cold Spring and will help to send a message to tourists that we care about them, too.
We have no place to hold meetings of any significance. This problem was evident when we were trying to find a space large enough for a public hearing regarding the Master Plan. The seniors are shifted from church to fire house for their programs and Bob, none of us are getting any younger these days. We need a permanent Community Center and if we do not take advantage of this developer's generous offer, this center could cost the County and village much more in the future.
I believe that the Mahopac and Putnam Valley centers cost over six million each. The County will actually be saving tax dollars, which at this point are not guaranteed as a part of this settlement.
As one of the largest businesses in Western Putnam, which is dependant on the viability of the Village of Cold Spring to tourists and visitors, I can assure you that we are grateful for your support of this settlement and will be pleased when this plan becomes a reality.
