Free Elections Can Never be taken for Granted
To the Editor:

Last week I attended the swearing in ceremonies at the Courthouse in Carmel. As I watched each elected official take their respective oaths of office, I was taken by the beauty and power of such events. We, as Americans, have a rich history. We have been a free nation since our fight for liberty in the Revolutionary War, and due to the resolve, sacrifice, and determination of our citizens, our liberty has never been taken away. We have held free elections for over 200 years, uninterrupted by any foe, by any enemy, or by any challenger jealous of our freedom and wishing to disrupt it. We stand proud, we stand tall, and we do not waiver.

Some may look at attendance at these ceremonies as a networking opportunity. It was a chance to meet and chat with our political friends for sure. But I see it as a reminder that this great privilege can never be taken for granted; that for those who serve us in public office a trust and honor they must always respect; and as a further reminder of how fortunate we are to be citizens of this great nation.
