February 16th Blood Drive at Haldane Takes on Special Significance due to Blood Emergency

The New York Metro Area is in a blood emergency. Currently there is less than a 3-day supply of type O blood which is the universal type used when other types are not readily available. This means that as you read this it is likely that some people will die because they couldn't receive the blood they need to survive.

In the Hudson Valley, the New York Blood Center has begun rationing orders to hospitals and is struggling to rebuild its supply which has dropped to less than 2 days. A quick recovery of the inventory is unlikely because there are too few blood drives scheduled in January and February.

Philipstown Community volunteers will be calling friends and neighbors in the next two weeks urging people to make an appointment. If you don't receive a call, please contact the Haldane School nurse's office at 265-9254 Ext.125 to sign up for the February 16 drive. Students who are 16 can donate with parental permission. Those seventeen and older don't need parental permission but still need their ID and social security number or their NY Blood Donor card. Eat plenty of iron rich foods the week before the drive and drink plenty of water or juice the day of the event.
