Teen Killed in Patterson Crash

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reported that a teenager from Southeast was killed on January 9, 2006, when the car he was driving crashed into a rock and a tree along Farm-to-Market Road in the Town of Patterson.

Christopher C. Caiazzo, aged 16, of Southeast, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly before 8pm. Sheriff's deputies and investigators have preliminarily determined that Mr. Caiazzo was driving alone in a black 1999 Nissan Maxima sedan and was heading northbound on Farm-to-Market Road when he apparently lost control of the car about a half-mile north of the intersection with Foggintown Road. The vehicle veered across the southbound lane and spun off the road, its passenger side hitting a large rock and impacting against a tree.

The victim was wearing a seatbelt, but the force of the impact collapsed the roof of the vehicle and caused apparent injuries to his head. Putnam County Coroner Daniel Stephens pronounced the teen dead at the crash site and indicated that the coroner's office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of the boy's death. Deputies and investigators have preliminarily listed excessive speed as an apparent factor in the crash, basing that finding on long skid marks left on the pavement and the extent of the damage to the car.

Mr. Caiazzo was an eleventhgrade student at Brewster High School. The Sheriff's Department notified school officials of the boy's death early in the morning on January 10, before the beginning of classes, so that teachers and counselors would be prepared to assist the victim's classmates in the aftermath of his death. Investigating the crash for the Sheriff's Department were Captain Thomas Lindert, Sergeants Timothy Gannon and Lee Stabe, Investigators Nicholas DePerno, Jeffrey Devolve and James Bambino, and Deputies John Alfano, Kevin McManus and Brian Aisenstat. The New York State Police and the Patterson and Brewster Volunteer Fire Departments assisted at the scene.
