Multiple Injuries in Route 301 Accidents
by Maria Theodore Leiter

The Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded to seven accident calls in the past two weeks.

On January 13, 2007, a vehicle rolled over after losing control on the Taconic State Parkway northbound South of the Route 301 exit. The female driver was transported by Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corp to the Hudson Valley Hospital Center. According to Second Assistant Chief Louie Longo, the woman did not sustain serious injuries.

On the other hand, three people involved in a three-car collision that took place near that same spot on the morning of January 18 were seriously injured and were transported to the Westchester Medical Center trauma center.

According to Longo, the PVVFD was called out to accidents two more times on that day. A little after 6pm, a vehicle skid off the road near Cimmarron Road. The driver and passenger, a male and pregnant female, were transported to the Hudson Valley Hospital Center. The male complained of wrist pain, and the pregnant woman wanted to be checked out as a precaution. Two hours later, another vehicle rollover took place on Canopus Hill Road. There were no apparent injuries.

Another personal injury accident was called in on January 20 at 4:27am. It took place on the Taconic State Parkway near route 301. No injuries were reported. The PVVFD also responded to two other personal injury accident calls, one on January 9 on Peekskill Hollow Road, and January 8 on Posey Road. Neither of these accidents resulted in injuries.

Fire calls for the PVVFD for past two weeks included an automatic alarm on Finch Lane, which was investigated and no problem was found. An investigation into a possible structure fire on Hickory Lane on January 17 found that smoke was coming from a malfunctioning oil burner. Two calls on that day, one on Oscawana Lake Road near Gilbert Lane, and one on Spruce Knolls, were both caused by alarms being set off by smoke from wood burning stoves In addition, the company responded to six incidents of accidental alarms.

Deputy Chief John Noschese reported that the North Highlands Fire Department responded to two personal injury accidents in the past two weeks. The first, on January 14, took place on Fishkill Road near the Cold Spring water treatment plant. An elderly woman in a vehicle skidded on an oil patch and slid off the road, hitting the embankment. She was evaluated by personnel of the Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and declined to go to the hospital. The fire department closed the road until a sander arrived to deal with the oil slick.

On January 12 at 8:42am, the NHFD was dispatched to another personal injury accident on Route 301, east of Route 9. The vehicle hit a patch of ice and slid into the embankment and rolled over. The female driver, who suffered minor bumps and bruises, was transported by PVAC to Hudson Valley Hospital Center.

Fire calls included a dispatch on January 10 to extinguish a controlled burn at 160 East Mountain Road South. Wind gusts were blowing hot embers around, threatening a wooded area.

On January 18, the NHFD responded to a call of a possible residential electrical fire on Victoria Drive off Lake Surprise Road. The homeowner reported that sparks were emitted from a power outlet. The department checked out the walls of the home with a thermal imaging camera and determined there was no fire behind the walls. The matter was turned over to an electrician. That same day they responded when a smoke detector was accidentally set off at the Glynwood Center on Glynwood Road.

The NHFD's FAST unit was dispatched for a mutual aid call to Fishkill at 3:31 in the morning on January 19, to assist the Rombout Fire Department at the site of a house fire that was reportedly set to cover up the murders of five members of one family (see separate story.)

The Cold Spring Fire Department did not report any calls for last week, but would like residents to be aware of a contest that is being held by Circuit City, the electronics company. As a salute to firefighters nationwide, the company announced it would hold an essay contest to benefit local fire companies. Ten firehouses will be awarded $20,000 each to purchase equipment and will become eligible for a grand prize of $100,000. The fire company is asking residents to submit short stories about how they feel their local fire company benefits the community. To submit a story on behalf of the CSFD, go online to the website www.firedog.net.

"The Cold Spring Fire Company could greatly use this prize money to update equipment and improve on our Fire prevention program," said Firefighter Dan Valentine.
