Accident Damages Garrison Post Office Building
Limited counter service available
by Maria Theodore Leiter

Window service has been shut down at the Garrison Post Office on Route 9D, following an accident that took place on Saturday, January 13, 2007. According to post office employee Daniel Burney, a vehicle drove into the front of the post office on that day, damaging the front of the building.

"Our window operation is closed completely," said Burney. He added that the post office is open for pick-up mail, or drop-off service through the rear door, provided that mail is pre-weighed and proper postage is affixed to it. Stamp sales are also not presently available.

According to Chief A. Gerald Schramek of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department, a 2006 Mercury driven by Patricia E. Richter of Garrison, NY hit the post office building, causing structural damage to the building. Deputy Robert Detlafs was the responding officer.

The police report indicates that the driver stated she put the vehicle in drive, instead of reverse, and ran into the building upon accelerating, Schramek reported. She and passenger Peter Richter were unhurt, according to the statement taken by Detlafs.

Pat McGovern, a spokesperson for the United States Post Office advised on Monday that the post office is aware of the accident and is working with the building owner and his insurance company to repair the damage to the building. "The building has been shored up and is safe for workers in the back room." However, she said that it would be unsafe to reopen the lobby to customers while construction is underway.

McGovern said that because the post office does not own the building, they cannot speculate as to when the work will be completed and normal service will be restored.

"We are sorry for the inconvenience," she said and directed people to the Cold Spring post office located three miles north on Route 9D. Also, people can get mailing labels and stamps on line at www.usps.com. Arrangements for pick-up can also be made online.

Regular mail deliveries have not be affected.
