Westchester County Resident Charged With DWI

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the January 14, 2007 arrest of Rafael Valladares, 26, of Smith Street in Peekskill, on drunk driving charges in the Town of Philipstown. A deputy sheriff arrested Mr. Valladares after stopping him for a traffic violation.

At about 2:14am on January 14th, Deputy Sheriff Robert Detlefs was patrolling along Route 9 in Philipstown when he observed a vehicle operating in an erratic manner. Deputy Detlefs stopped the car and found Mr. Valladares at the wheel. During the ensuing exchange, the deputy became suspicious that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and administered several field sobriety tests to him, which the defendant failed.

Deputy Detlefs arrested the defendant on misdemeanor charges of Driving While Intoxicated ("DWI") and Driving with a Blood Alcohol Level greater than .08%. Mr. Gould was also charged with possession of alcoholic beverages with intent to consume by a person under the age of twenty-one, a violation. The defendant was arraigned by Philipstown Justice Alan Steiner and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500 bail.

Mr. Valladares is scheduled to return to the Philipstown Justice Court at a future date to answer the charges. Each misdemeanor charge is punishable by up to a year in jail, a $1000 fine, and sanctions against his privilege to drive in New York, upon conviction.
