Soldiers Reading PCNR Photo Brought Back Memories To the Editor:
Your photo and story in the Jan. 17 edition about the three soldiers in Iraq reading the PCNR, brought back memories from "long ago and far away."
As a sailor in the Far East from 1967 through 1969, I received the paper from a subscription my parents took out for me. I must confess that the delivery in those days was far less timely than that which you mentioned in the article. Sometimes I would receive several weeks' papers in a bundle, but, having been away from home for several years, it didn't really matter. And it was in obvious contrast to the stuff we got from The Stars and Stripes.
And although some of my buddies thought the paper was "quaint" they always managed to read it, with obvious interest. Even in those days, the Letters to the Editor section was as interesting as it is today. And the size, the same as today, is telling when one realizes that The Wall Street Journal has just reduced its size and the New York Times will do the same next year.
Congratulations on your offer to deliver the paper to others - gratis.
