BOCES Presents a Day of Hands-On Exploration for Kids and Adults
Monster Storms, Climate Change & Energy Conservation are the Focus

Blizzards, tornadoes, lightning, climate change- it's all in the air at the Jason Project Family Science Day at Putnam/ Northern Westchester Board of Cooperative Educational Services in Yorktown. The event, which will feature conferences with noted meteorologists as well as hands-on exhibits, will take place Saturday, February 3 from 10am to 3pm.

The Jason Project is an innovative science program founded by Dr. Robert Ballard, renowned for his discovery of the Titanic, to spark students' interest in science, math and technology. This year's program examines everything there is to know about weather including heat waves, carbon sinks, weather forecasting, storm formation, changes in migration patterns, and what humans need to do to prevent catastrophic global warming.

Famed local meteorologist Jim Witt will present a live program on weather forecasting and storm formation and participants will have an opportunity to conference via phone or telecast with noted scientists including Dr. Jim Hack at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and Dr. Frank Marks at the Hurricane Center.

Visitors will also have the chance to attend a live animal program on Animals as Meteorologists, in which Jason Project staff members explain the types of animal behavior that can signal upcoming weather changes. A hawk, an owl, a snake and turtle will be featured in the program. In the exhibit room, children and adults alike will get to experience what it was like to walk the streets of New York after the Blizzard of 1888 when snow drifts reached 50 feet in height. They will also get to see a real 15-foot-high weather balloon, once used to test atmospheric conditions, and will see and experience an artistic representation of a tornado. The JASON Project is sponsored by the Putnam/ Northern Westchester BOCES Center for Environmental Education. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for children. No reservations are necessary. For further information in advance, call 914-248-2339. For directions, call 914-245-2700 ext. 575.
