Hubble Space Telescope Has a Cold Spring Connection
Dr. H. John Wood, Optics Lead Engineer on the Hubble Space Telescope Project at the Goddard Space Flight Center, presented information about the project to Haldane students. His grandchildren Freya Wood- Gallagher, kindergarten, and Ronan, grade 2, especially enjoyed the presentation.
Dr. Wood's love of astronomy started when he was 8 years old when a neighbor built a telescope in a rotating dome on the top of his house. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is providing breathtaking views of astronomical objects never before seen in such detail. The images are steady because the telescope is above the earth's atmosphere so it can image the faintest galaxies ever seen by mankind.
The Haldane future astronomers were amazed by the beautiful space photographs that Dr. Wood shared with them. After the presentation the children had the opportunity to ask Dr. Wood questions. Many thanks to Dr. Wood for sharing his knowledge with the Haldane students. This unique and exciting learning experience is one the children will remember for a long time.
