Homeless Men Relocated From Encampment in Southeast Woods

Southeast Supervisor John Dunford, Putnam County Dept. of Social Services Commissioner Michael Piazza and Putnam County Sheriff Smith have reported that their offices have coordinated in relocating four homeless men from an illegal encampment in Southeast to shelters. The action was taken after Southeast officials received complaints that the encampment existed in violation of local land use ordinances and was deemed to pose dangers to the public health and safety.

The encampment, consisting of five shelters constructed of tree branches and plastic tarps, was located on private property near the intersection of Interstates 84 and 684 owned by the Brewster Development Group, LLC. Town officials notified the company about the situation. A company representative, Nikolas Gianopoulis, advised authorities that the persons were trespassers and the company wanted them removed or arrested.

Town officials notified the Sheriff's Department of the situation on January 25th. The next morning, Sheriff's investigators and deputies, Southeast Fire and Building Inspectors, and caseworkers from the Dept. of Social Services went to the encampment. There, they found the four men, ranging in ages between 35 and 52 occupying the makeshift shelters. The shelters were located 300 or more feet from Interstate 84.

The authorities on the scene reported that the men appeared to be members of the local community of immigrant day laborers. Sheriff's personnel, assisted by a Spanish-speaking officer of the NYC Environmental Protection Police, ordered them to leave.

The men collected their personal effects and accepted transportation offered by caseworkers, who drove them to that agency's offices in Carmel. There, caseworkers helped the men make arrangements for temporary shelter with the Brewster Emergency Shelter Partnership, a consortium of civic and faith-based organizations in the Brewster area.
