Putnam County Children's Committee to Award College Scholarships

Donations to the Putnam County Children's Committee go directly to the needy children of Putnam County, and these donations are fully deductible for federal income tax purposes. One of the many activities of this committee is the awarding of college scholarship money to local needy children.

Local guidance offices and social organizations are currently alerting children who may qualify for one of these scholarships. Each spring, letters are sent to Putnam County schools announcing these scholarships. Winners are chosen by their academic goals and financial need. If you or someone you know is interested in applying, call Committee President Janet Canniff at 845-225- 3225 for information.

Besides these scholarships, local children in foster homes, group homes and institutions are helped with funds from this committee. Recently, a local fourteen-year-old boy was awarded money to attend camp for a leadership program.. Another teenager's father is ill and there is little family income, and the committee awarded her emergency clothing money.

When children need special assistance not provided by social agencies, the committee is there to step in and help. Since 1918 this all volunteer, nonprofit committee has been there for Putnam County children. They have been providing allowances, birthday gifts and holiday money to needy children as well as emergency monies. Support for this program comes through the generosity of residents to an annual letter appeal, which will go out this spring. Call at the above number for more information regarding this committee's goals and efforts.
