Swimming and Lifeguard Training Available From American Red Cross

With the frigid temperatures, not many people are running, diving and splashing into the bone-chilling water right now. Yet, February is as good a time as any to start thinking about warmer temperatures, water safety at beaches, pools and water parks, and a job as a lifeguard.

The American Red Cross has been the leader in water safety, including swimming and lifeguard training, since 1914. Ninety percent of the lifeguard workforce nationwide is Red Cross trained and two million people learn about swimming safety each year from the Red Cross.

The American Red Cross recently introduced a new lifeguard program that provides the latest science in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency cardiovascular care. The courses help participants concentrate on the basic skills, safety protocols and rescue situations likely to occur, while ensuring that all lifeguards attain basic training requirements. A separate component leads to certification as a lifeguard instructor.

The American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY) offers aquatics training courses in Putnam county on weekdays, evenings and weekends. To learn more, contact ARC/GNY - Putnam/West Point at 845- 938-4100. You also can call

1-877-REDCROSS (1-877- 733-2767), or review the Red Cross course catalog at www.nyredcross.com .

Courses include:

* Lifeguard Training with Waterfront Lifeguarding - teaches prevention of and response to aquatic emergencies at pools and lakes. After four days, attendees will be certified with lifeguard training, first aid, CPR for the professional rescuer and training in the latest automated external defibrillator (AED) module that is the newest requirement for lifeguards. Tips also will be provided on how to secure a lifeguard job. * Water Park Lifeguarding - teaches about water park environments, multi-attraction facilities and traditional pools. Spinal injury management is taught along with recommended rules for water parks. * Lifeguard Training Instructor Course - provides attendees with the ability to teach lifeguard training to prospective lifeguards. Sessions cover the basics as well as oxygen administration, lifeguard management and preventing disease transmission.

ARC/GNY provides immediate aid to more than 100,000 people affected by more than 3,000 emergencies a year, including fires, floods, building collapses and blackouts. Given the uncertainties of today's world, the chapter is accelerating its collaboration with partner agencies to develop and implement readiness plans to respond to major natural and man-made disasters. The chapter also helps New York residents and businesses prepare for emergencies by offering hundreds of courses in first aid, CPR and aquatics, and free emergency preparedness training programs and resources.

ARC/GNY is not a governmental organization and relies on individual and corporate gifts, special events and grants from foundations and local, state and federal government to fund its essential programs and services. For more information about volunteering, donating and training, call 1- 877 REDCROSS (1-877-733- 2767), or visit www.nyredcross.org.
